Don’t Risk It – Is Your Site Power Actually Compliant?
Many “heavy duty” power boards aren’t compliant for NZ construction sites. Learn what AS/NZS 3012 requires and why a certified PSOA like the LIFEGUARD® 6 matters.
If you’re a Kiwi builder, sparkie, or contractor running jobs across NZ, here’s a straight-up question:
Are you 100% sure the power board on your site is legal?
Because here’s the reality — WorkSafe NZ is clear:
“Domestic multi-boards should never be used on a construction site. They have no protection to stop moisture or dust getting in. High power loads (such as circular saws and drills) can easily exceed the recommended current ratings.”
And yet… they’re still out there. Painted black or orange. Labelled “heavy duty.” Looking the part. But looking tough and being compliant are two very different things.
The Problem on Site
Temporary power on construction and demolition sites must comply with AS/NZS 3012.
That means you need a PSOA (Portable Socket Outlet Assembly) — not a glorified power board.
A compliant PSOA must include:
-
An RCD (Residual Current Device)
-
An overload circuit breaker
-
One or more power outlets
Surge protection is NOT enough.
Some products on the market:
-
Are surge-protection only (not compliant)
-
Have a built-in RCD but don’t meet AS/NZS 3012
-
Are limited to 10A only
-
Only carry an IP44 rating (fine for a garage… not a muddy site)
If it doesn’t meet 3012, it’s not site compliant. Simple as that
Why It Matters.
Using non-compliant gear doesn’t just risk:
-
Fines
-
Site shutdowns
-
Failed inspections
It risks your crew.
Water. Dust. Steel. Temporary wiring.
Construction sites are unforgiving environments.
You need gear built for it — not something that just resembles it.

Push Safety. Push Compliance.
On a busy site, you’ve got enough to think about — deadlines, inspections, weather, materials.
Power safety shouldn’t be a grey area.
If you’re plugging into temporary supply on a construction site in New Zealand, make sure you’re using equipment that actually meets the standard.
Because when WorkSafe says domestic multi-boards should never be used on site…
They mean it.
