“Domestic multi-boards should never be used on a construction site. They have no protection to stop moisture or dust getting in. High power loads (such as circular saws and drills) can easily exceed the recommended current ratings.”

And yet… they’re still out there. Painted black or orange. Labelled “heavy duty.” Looking the part. But looking tough and being compliant are two very different things.

The Problem on Site

Temporary power on construction and demolition sites must comply with AS/NZS 3012.

That means you need a PSOA (Portable Socket Outlet Assembly) — not a glorified power board.

A compliant PSOA must include:

• An RCD (Residual Current Device)

• An overload circuit breaker

• One or more power outlets

Surge protection is NOT enough.

Some products on the market:

• Are surge-protection only (not compliant)

• Have a built-in RCD but don’t meet AS/NZS 3012

• Are limited to 10A only

• Only carry an IP44 rating (fine for a garage… not a muddy site)

If it doesn’t meet 3012, it’s not site compliant. Simple as that
