Lighting the Dunedin Tunnels Trail with TPLX
TPLX lit the Dunedin Tunnels Trail, safely illuminating 475 metres of historic Victorian railway tunnels during restoration and bringing heritage back to life.
The Dunedin Tunnels Trail is breathing new life into a remarkable piece of Victorian engineering. Set to create a 15km walking and cycling connection between Dunedin and Mosgiel, the project aims to reopen the historic Chain Hills and Lookout Point railway tunnels—originally built in the 1870s. Once complete, the trail will offer a safe, scenic route for walkers, cyclists, commuters, families, and visitors, reconnecting communities while celebrating the region’s railway heritage.
As work progressed deep inside these long-disused tunnels, lighting became a critical element for safety and visibility. That’s where Jackson Industries—and our partners at Telfer Electrical Otago—stepped in.
To support restoration crews, we supplied 475 metres of TPLX chain lighting, the equivalent of 19 sets of our 25m, 10-lamp systems. These were daisy-chained into a few long, continuous runs, all sharing a unified power supply to illuminate the full tunnel length during construction.
Our TPLX lights proved ideal for the unique environment: long, dark, damp, and heritage-sensitive. With IP68-rated durability, patented cable design, and powerful, even illumination, they ensured crews could work safely while enhancing visibility across brickwork, ceiling formations, and structural features that hadn’t been seen clearly in over a century.
The restoration has already inspired excitement. The Mayor of Dunedin shared, “The beautiful brickwork from the 1870s, the lime formations, and the emergence into beautiful bush with birds singing—it’s going to be magical!”
We’re incredibly proud that TPLX played a role in revealing these historic tunnels once again—helping light the way for a project that will reconnect people, honour heritage, and create a new adventure for generations to come.
